41st MCW Report

We made it!

The 41st Annual Magic Collectors Weekend (MCW) successfully concluded this past weekend in Chicago at the Westin O'Hare hotel. This year, we honoured George Daily and Mike Caveney. Each guest acknowledged and honoured the other with delightful anecdotes of their longtime business relationship and adventures in locating magic treasures. The two ended their presentations with a lovely recap of their biggest project together, acquiring Egyptian Hall. What a story!

Another huge highlight of the Weekend was listening to Walter "Zaney" Blaney give the detailed history of his world-famous Ladder Levitation. Walter fondly recalled great moments of the Ladder's lifespan, from his inspiration to create it to historic appearances on Johnny Carson. Walter also gave his last and final performance at the 41st MCA. It was, indeed, an emotional and historic moment. Walter's daughter - who is also a successful magician and entertainer - made a special trip to Chicago so she could share this golden moment with her father.

Magic, Secrets and Wizards.... Oh My!

Forgive the lag in the postings, but HOLY MOLY have we been busy!

First, we congratulate, once again, our Tony Eng Youth Fund Winner, Jennifer Antonio of Winnipeg. She won an all-expense paid trip from Winnipeg to Kitchener-Waterloo to attend this year's Canadian Magician's Association's (CAM) 2010 convention. Read all about it here. We are thrilled that this talented young lady was able to attend a national conference, accompanied by her father, Richard, thanks to the generous support of Kent Wong of Edmonton, the CAM and all the supporters and donors of the Tony Eng Youth Fund.

Next, we were delighted to be contacted by our long-time partner, The York School, to provide magic for the annual Grade 7 and 8, Challenge Week, this week May 3 to 7.

Each year, 13 to 15 York School students are secreted away to an undisclosed location and given an intensive, introductory program to performing magic. This year, in addition to the chockful schedule, we also added new guest speakers, 'Vladimir Eisengrim' of The Paranormal Show and magician, Scott McClelland. The shocking and bizarre magic was a great lesson to underscore to our students that knowing the secret is a small part of performing great magic! In addition to learning some crafty magic, students also learned valuable tips and tricks of the trade to being great presenters. We hope these life-skills will serve our students in the future.

Congratulations to this year's York Challenge Students. They not only survived 'Boot Camp Magic' by Magicana, but they also successfully performed six shows for the Lower School at York and for the senior residents at The Belmont House! No small achievement! We applaud this year's graduates for meeting this difficult challenge with energy and enthusiasm. May the magic continue on in your Magic Hands!

Finally, we are thrilled to announce that Magicana will be hosting the 41st annual Magic Collectors Weekend in Chicago, where we are honouring Mike Caveney and George Daily. We are only five days away from the big event, which will be held May 13 to 16 at the Westin O'Hare in Rosemont (Chicago).

If you have a slight (or, is that sleight?) interest in collecting magic, magic's history or great magicians of the past, you may want to consider joining the Magic Collectors Association. Magicana is the new administrative body taking care of the MCA, its membership and its quarterly publication of Magicol - a serial journal that has been produced and shared with members for fifty years.

So, all in all, the last three weeks have been very busy, but also pretty magical!

As we have announced, Magicana is programming the Masters of Magic series as a part of Toronto's wonderful arts festival, Luminato. The masters of magic this year are: Juan Tamariz (presenting his show in English, French and Spanish), Mac King, Max Maven and Bob Sheets. The Masters of Magic series begins June 17 and concludes June 20. Tickets will go on sale through TicketMaster.ca on April 15.

Masters of Magic

As we noted earlier this week, the big news is that Magicana is working with Luminato to present four international super stars of magic in June. We have updated our website with additional details on the Masters of Magic series and on the individuals performing. For now, we have included some information on the venue, ticketing and performance times. More information will follow soon.

Juan Tamariz will present his show in three languages (Spanish, English and French) over the course of three days. Audiences will simply be enchanted by this mesmerizing magician and see exactly why Juan is considered the best in the world.

Looking for great family entertainment? You can't go wrong with Mac King. For two afternoons, he will be presenting his full, Las Vegas act - you will not get a chance to see this anywhere else outside of Vegas! Talk about a rare opportunity.

Max Maven will be staging - for one night only - his acclaimed show, "Thinking In Person". This highly interactive show promises to keep your mind very active. There is a rich and eclectic mix of magic, mentalism and yes, even some musing.

The only tricky guy to nail down in one spot will be Bob Sheets. He will be roving all over town staging impromptu shows just about anywhere! This outrageously funny and loveable guy will be providing free performances in venues throughout the city.

For ten extraordinary days in June, Toronto’s stages, streets, and public spaces are illuminated with arts and creativity with Luminato. This annual multi-disciplinary celebration of theatre, literature, music, food, dance, celebrations, visual arts, fashion, film will now feature magic.

The Masters of Magic, brings four of the world’s master magicians to Luminato to highlight one of the world’s oldest performing arts.

Spain’s Juan Tamariz will demonstrate his skillful minimalist and improvisational magic in not one, but three languages! The maestro will performs one show each in Spanish, English, and French.

Charismatic mentalist Max Maven, once described by Orson Welles as “the most original mind in magic,” will display his skill as a master mind reader, while Mac King, a humourist with a magical bent, will use his blend of magic and comedy to enchant viewers of all ages.

Meanwhile, Bob Sheets brings his own brand of manic comic showmanship to the streets of Toronto in a series of free performances.

Jason England | Western Canadian Tour Update

Renowned expert on gambling and sleight-of-hand with cards, Jason England hit the road last Friday with his 10-day tour of Western Canadian cities in Vancouver, BC.

Jason has visited Vancouver, BC; Edmonton, AB; Regina, SK; Calgary, AB and will finish his tour in Victoria, BC.

Now, with the tour in its second week, we would like to share some of the great feedback we’ve received from those in attendance:

Jason England's lecture here in Vancouver was very well received. His reputation preceded him and he succeeded in impressing every member of the audience with his skills and personality. Whew! It's finally out the door.

Our first issue of Magicol (Feb Issue No. 174) is now in the hands of our printers. It will soon be posted and in your mailboxes, soon.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, well, Magicana is the new administrative body for the Magic Collectors Association (MCA). The unbelievably-low membership fee includes delivery of the quarterly-issued journal, Magicol.

The MCA, founded in 1949, has been keeping a journal for the past fifty years for its membership. On behalf of our program sponsors, Kent Wong and the Canadian Association of Magicians, we are delighted and thrilled to announce that we have a winner for the Tony Eng Youth Fund CAM contest.

The opportunity to win a free trip to the 2010 CAM in Kitchener-Waterloo drew several fine applications from young magicians from Western Canada. We were impressed with the quality of the submissions and the judges reported that it was difficult to select just one.

But, there can only be one winner.

The first round of (blind panel) judging drew three finalists and those final three were subjected to a second round of scrutiny by judges. It was close, but after much consideration we have determined our winner.

Congratulations to Miss Jennifer Antonio of Winnipeg, Manitoba. This 15-year-old aspiring young magician wrote a compelling and articulate application, which edged her into the winner's circle.

Jennifer has won a free trip to the CAM convention which includes return airfare and ground transportation, hotel accommodations and convention registrations for herself and for her father who will be accompanying this young lady on her first big convention. We are honoured to have her represent Magicana's TEYF as our inaugural winner for the CAM contest.

This lecture will feature some more advanced card moves as well as diabolically clever self-working and almost self-working routines which are within the grasp of beginning and intermediate card handlers and give the illusion of incredible skill.

Workshop

False Deals – Detailed descriptions “from the ground up” to help you learn the Second Deal (push off and strike deals), the modern Bottom Deal, and the fabled Center Deal.

Palming – Classical methods of palming from Erdnase including top and bottom palms for single and multiple cards and more recent developments including the Gambler’s Cop and Gambler’s Flat Palm.

False Shuffles – False shuffles suitable for use at the table including technique and routines with the Push-Through Shuffle and Riffle Stacking.

Glorious triumphs

There is nothing more satisfying than seeing the toothy grins of newly-minted My Magic Hands magicians. Their smiles remind us why this program is so powerful.

For the past three weeks, Magicana has been delivering a special version of My Magic Hands for the clients at Bloorview Kids Rehab. Nine clients met with our magicians twice a week, for three consecutive weeks. In between sessions, the Bloorview magicians also practiced their magic under the supervision of Bloorview's team of occupational and speech therapists. Today was their Big Show and Graduation.

The clients are referred to the program by their therapists with specific goals to reach. During the course, each magician chooses tricks to help in areas such as memory, speech or fine motor skills. Every magician has a unique situation and is works to overcome their own specific challenges. Some of them work from a wheelchair, or some may only have the use of one hand. So you can imagine, even the simplest steps - such as taking a rope out of a pocket or spreading a deck of cards - require our Bloorview magicians to work hard to problem-solve and most importantly, practice, practice and practice!

And did they ever!

Today, our performers not only performed in front of a group of 50 people, they also stole the hearts of the audience. Each Bloorview magician got up in front of the audience and pulled off their magic with style and grace. Of course, they were nervous and had lots of stage fright, but they all met the challenge and triumphantly walked off stage as "magicians". With the help of some of Bloorview's technical wizardry, everyone had a great view of the performers projected on screen. One magician even sent in her performance by video because she was discharged just before The Big Show and was settling back into school.

It was particularly moving to have one young magician spontaneously thank the audience for attending and then singled out her therapists for their help to get her to the stage. When this young lady joined the program, she was struggling with speech goals. Today she spoke so articulately that she moved some of the audience to tears.

We congratulate all of the magicians for their outstanding work. We also stand in awe of the magical team at Bloorview. The dedication we saw at Bloorview continually inspires!

Well, the entires are in!

Thank you to those who participated in Magicana's Tony Eng Youth Fund CAM competition. All entires have been validated and now submissions are in the hands of our judges. The all-star CAM convention is just around the corner, April 29 to May 1. The convention promises quite a showing of international talent; you don't want to miss your chance!

The judges will score the entires "blind" (not knowing anything about the applicant other than their age and submission) based on the merit of each individual's application. The judges include a magician from Western Canada, representatives from the Magicana Board of Directors, CAM Board of Directors and a member of the Eng family.

We will release the name of the winner on our website and blog on Monday March 1, 2010 so be sure to check back often!

The Magic of Giving

While the bulk of the gift-giving season may be over, Magicana was very fortunate to receive a special gift yesterday from the Association of Investment Management Sales Executives (AIMSE).

The group was meeting in Toronto for a jam-packed day of professional development. Despite the full schedule of meetings and programming, conference chairman, Michael Gillis, took the time to recognize Magicana's work, particularly in our outreach program for seniors, Senior Sorcery.

In lieu of presenting keynote speakers with gifts, AIMSE instead offers financial support targeting local charities. For the past four years, Magicana has been the lucky recipient for the regional conference.

This year's donation will allow Magicana to continue build upon our program which provides live, interactive magic shows for isolated seniors in community homes and centres across (and beyond) the GTA. Last year, we were able to provide forty shows. With busy lives full of activity, it is easy to forget how monotonous the days can become for residents. Feedback from ours shows have only reinforced how important it is to provide fresh entertainment, especially the kind that engages the mind - like magic!

My Magic Hands

We completed 14 rounds of My Magic Hands engaging 200 participants, over 100 volunteers! Participants provided their versions of The Big Show to over 800 community members. Thanks to the generosity of our donors and sponsors, we were able to provide the program to over 180 participants free of charge.

We provided our magic classes to a wide range of community and family agencies across the Greater Toronto Area, including:

Without a doubt, the program would not be possible without our volunteers, affectionately referred to as our “Magic Coaches”. Thanks to our partners, we were able to create and build upon important relationships between our volunteers and participants. A quote from one of our volunteers:

In The Community

Magicana also provided 42 shows for over 2,000 community members through our Sharing Wonder and Senior Sorcery programs.

These programs focus on bringing magic to those who may not necessarily have access to live magic shows, with a particular concentration on servicing isolated senior centres. The sad reality is that many centres do not have adequate budgets to provide fees for live entertainment. Magicana's Senior Sorcery program contributes by asking centres to "pay-what-you-can" and in exchange, we arrange magic shows – and funding assistance, when necessary. A quote from a senior's residence:

"I just wanted to take a minute to tell you what a wonderful performance you gave at our retirement home. It was very well-paced, with just the right combination of storytelling, sleight-of-hand and humour ... I have received many compliments since."

We were thrilled to add new magicians to our roster of performers including Mark Lewis and Wij the Magician. These gentlemen - along with Magicana performers Julie Eng and James Alan - provided magic, laughs and of course, wonder.

Sharing Magic with Magicians

Throughout the year, we produced several magic lectures and workshops by visiting magicians including John Carney, Norman Beck, David Soloman and Richard Turner. We also hosted our annual conference, 31 Faces North, which was co-hosted by Allan Slaight. This year at 31 Faces North we had two guest of honours: Michael Weber and Bob Sheets. Mr. Weber was also the recipient of the Jay Marshall Award, voted as the most contributory participant by his peers.

Our Tony Eng Youth Fund sponsored several young magicians as we reported in previous blogs, and we were delighted to see a formal partnership bond with magician, Kent Wong and the Canadian Association of Magicians for our latest contest, a chance to win a FREE trip to the 2010 CAM convention in Kitchener-Waterloo including return airfare and hotel accommodations. We are indebted to Mr. Wong and to the CAM for their sponsorship and commitment to youths interested in magic.

This fall, Magicana became the stewards of the Magic Collectors’ Association (MCA) taking over the responsibility of publishing a quarterly journal, Magicol, and producing its annual convention, traditionally hosted in Chicago. Magicana is delighted with the new role and is currently conjuoring many other surprises for MCA members. Membership is open to anyone and is available here. Join now!

Entering the Blogosphere

Finally, we got it together to bring you more blogs! In addition to our own Sharing Wonder Blog, Magicana is delighted to now provide at the encouragement of the Johnson Family, The Magical Chatterbox, A Blog by Sid Lorraine.

The Spirit of Giving

In May 2008, Magicana established the Tony Eng Youth Fund in loving memory of Tony Eng, who passed away suddenly after a short battle with cancer. Tony and his wife, Ann, ran Tony's Trick & Joke Shop (now called Murray's Trick & Joke Shop and owned by magicians, Murray Hatfield and Teresa Midbo) in Victoria, BC for nearly 20 years. Tony was responsible for many magicians getting their first start in magic.

The driving force and goal of the Tony Eng Youth Fund is to offer a program that shares and promotes magic with youths, something that Tony always championed. The program has now fully developed into a granting fund administered by Magicana, where young Canadian magicians can request financial assistance to further their study and exploration in magic.

At first, the program started by sponsoring youths to attend lectures and workshops and over the course of the year, the program evolved. It really took a big leap forward when we partnered with Edmonton magician, Kent Wong and the Canadian Association of Magicians to create a contest opportunity, a free trip to attend the 2010 and 2011 national CAM Conventions.

This particular contest invites young magicians from Western Canada to write in and to tell us why they should go to the CAM convention in April/May 2010 in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario. The lucky winner will receive return airfare from a major western Canadian city, full convention registration and hotel accommodation -- and, because we are working with youths 13 to 18 years old, the prize package covers not only to the young magician, but also his/her guardian! To be fair to eastern Canadian youths, all three sponsors agreed to reciprocate and offer the same prize package for a young magician from Eastern Canada to attend the CAM in 2011 which will be held in Vancouver, BC.

Another "first" for the Tony Eng Youth Fund was helping a young magician locate and purchase a much-needed prop. We recently received an application from a young man in British Columbia who wanted to purchase a special table to streamline his magic show. After reviewing his application, we agreed to offer financial assistance towards the purchase of a Joe Lefler ProSuitcase Table, which acts both as a table and a carrying case for show materials. Thanks to Murray Hatfield of Murray's Trick & Joke Shop in Victoria, and to the builder, Mr. Lefler, the table has been delivered to our recipient, Alex Seaman.

Here are a few words from Alex:

A couple months ago, I heard about the Tony Eng Youth Fund from an adult member of the Vancouver Magic Circle, Ring #92 of the International Brotherhood of Magicians. I heard that, if selected, I could get a grant in order to further my magic. So I decided to apply!

I’d been looking at getting a suitcase table for years but have never had the money due to such a cost. I looked around the web for one that I thought would work well for me and from what I found; the Joe Lefler Pro Suitcase table was by far the best in quality! With it, I’d be able to cut my set up and take down time in half! When I do birthday parties, I always have 2 boxes of magic stuff, so I need to put them somewhere, so I have one table that I perform on and one table that a box would go on (the second box sits behind the performing table). This makes it difficult to move around the performance area and I must be very careful about when I bring assistants on stage because just by looking sideways they can see into either of the boxes. This suitcase table would solve everything!

I received my suitcase table about a week ago and it has made everything so much easier! My whole birthday party act fits in the table with so much room! I can even fit a 12’ inflatable wand inside (when it’s deflated of course) and the pump! Bringing up children to help me out is no problem at all because the kids can’t see into the table unless they’re directly behind it! Even my Stand Up act fits in with even more room inside! And the best part is that as soon as my Birthday Party show is over and all the kids rush up to come and talk with me, all I need to do to “end clean” if flip down the performance top part of the box and lock it into place, now the table is a closed box with nothing exposed and there’s nothing for the kids to touch and feel that they’re not supposed to and now the extra time can be dedicated to talking with the kids, even showing them a special little magic trick (sponge balls) and creating even more of a connection which is great for any kids that weren’t able to get called up to help with the show!
The Tony Eng Youth Fund helped me so much by helping me finance this investment which has brought a whole new dimension to my magic. I highly recommend supporting this incredible program because they do so much great work helping out the younger magicians!

Magic Makes A Difference

Magicana was honoured to be a part of a recent fundraising event by The Stephen Leacock Foundation for Children - a foundation dedicated to helping disadvantaged youth. One of its primary activities is hosting annual dinners for members of The Leacock Club. The Club, more than anything, is a community of sensibilities; a gathering of people from different walks of life that looks at the world in the same way and takes pleasure in the same things. More importantly, members raise significant awareness, funds and resources to aid children and children's programs in Toronto and as far away as Whittlesea in South Africa.

Magicana's Executive Director, Julie Eng and its Artistic Director, David Ben - a long-time member and supporter of the Leacock Club - were invited to sprinkle their magic at the annual fall event on November 17th and November 18th. It was hosted at the beautiful Auberge du Pommier in Toronto.

The intimate affair gave Club Members a chance to see the power of philanthropy and generosity as Leacock Club Chair, Peter Oliver, outlined the outstanding achievements that the Foundation has established in Toronto's own back yard and in Whittlesea, South Africa. Magicana is connected with the Foundation through programming in Toronto like the Homework Clubs where, in partnership with Havergal College, we deliver My Magic Hands.

Part of the Leacock tradition includes wit and good humour (naturally, with the Club's namesake being humourist Stephen Leacock) and now, a bit of magic as well. The Club likes to remind its membership that generosity feels good. And the world could use a bit more of it, too. What is wonderful is that the Club also believes that a serious cause is not necessarily a cause for seriousness and that laughter and fun nourishes the soul - a philosophy that Magicana is very proud to support. Magic can make a difference.

We congratulate the Members of the Leacock Club for their incredible work and commitment towards children's education and well-being. It is heart-warming to know that these future generations have such guardians watching over them.

On Sunday Nov, 8, 2009 Magicana was thrilled to present "Bootcamp Magic" a one-day magic workshop for children attending Camp Oochigeas' Urban Camp.

Camp Oochigeas is a privately funded, volunteer-based organization that provides kids with cancer and kids affected by childhood cancer with a unique opportunity for growth through challenging, fun and magical experiences.

Magicana was honoured be invited to provide a custom-version of our children's program, My Magic Hands. We created custom "Boxes of Secrets" for each child and Magicana provided all the instruction and Camp Ooch Counsellors took the role of Magic Coach. The children were, of course, our magicians for the day.

The morning started magically right off the top: as campers arrived, they checked into the "magic station" where "magic powers" were created ... with duct tape, crepe-paper streamers and a lot of imagination! We made magic wands, supercapes, power shields and of course, magic bands of power.

After taking our oaths of secrecy, we rolled up our sleeves and dove into learning magic. Children learned magic with ropes, "props", cards, sponges and even a fortune-telling fish! It was a jam-packed day of learning and fun.

A highlight was the immense delight the magicians showed as they discovered magic (and their own abilities!) and watching how their counsellors brought out the very best in each child. And, being at camp, you never knew when a group of campers and their coaches would suddenly break into song! Magicana "retaliated" with random acts of magic.

At the end of the day, we invited family and friends to come and attend The Big Show where 19 of the children presented the magic that they had learned. Family members confessed to us afterwards that they were astounded at how much the children learned in just five hours. The audience applauded wildly as the children graduated with their "Box of Secrets" and "Certificates of Completion" in hand.

What did the kids think of the day:

"The classes were fun and the teachers were great! The Big Show was awesome."

"The Big Show was the most fun of the program."

"I wish that we could learn more magic tricks!"

"It's wonderful to learn magic. I love magic now a lot."

Magicana was very proud to be a part of something so powerful and inspiring. We were pleased to have Julie Eng at the helm leading the team with assistance from James Alan and Magicana volunteer extraordinaire, Joe Culpepper. We applaud and acknowledge the incredible and hard-working volunteers and staff of Camp Ooch for making the event possible.

It is wonderful to see that anything is possible!

Rene Johnson Passes Away

Rene Johnson, wife of Sid Lorraine, passed away on October 31, 2009. She was born Irene Kathleen Annie Buttler on March 26, 1911 in Leystonstone, England, a suburb of London, England. Her family relocated to Canada when she was a child. From her earliest years, she was interested in art. In her late teens, Rene began work as a commercial artist for Batten, a graphic arts and lithography firm in Toronto, Ontario. It was there that she met Sid Johnson, an assistant art director of the company. After a three year courtship, they were married July 20, 1932, the very day Sid started the run of his weekly radio show – Radio Magic – on C.F.R.B. (Above photo: Sid and Rene on their wedding day.) They were married for fifty-seven years.

During their early marriage, Rene became a freelance artist for Chatelaine magazine, Better Homes and Gardens and drew illustrations for Church of England publications. Ever gracious and hospitable, the couple often invited touring magicians, famous and infamous, to their home. Rene quickly became friends with magicians around the world. When their two children, Ruth and Douglas, began college, Rene began accompanying Sid to magic conventions and was a great supporter of his passion for magic. As their daughter Ruth wrote, “Sid was her best friend, her hero, her lover, her mentor and her soul mate."

Sid dedicated his “Scrapbook”, published by the Abbott Magic Co to Rene:

This book is affectionately dedicated to my wife, Rene...who, for thirty years has done such a fine job of raising a family; putting out the garbage; shoveling snow; cleaning windows; digging the garden; spreading fertilizer and cutting down trees; mowing the lawn; mixing cement; hanging wallpaper; repairing stoves and cleaning drains...so that I could devote my time to the more important things like thimble-moves and cutting rope...threading colored beads and blocks on bits of string and doing major research with rubber bands, paper clips and playing cards.

Even many years after Sid's death on October 15, 1989, Rene still corresponded with magicians near and far. She had candour, wit, talent, an amazing memory and a lust for life. She was loved by all who had the honour of knowing her and will be sorely missed.

David Ben, Artistic Director of Magicana, is pleased to announce that Magicana is taking over the stewardship of the Magic Collectors’ Association.

Founded over sixty years ago, the MCA has staged an annual conference devoted to discussing the history of magic as a performing art, profiling its builders and championing its performers. It has published Magicol, a quarterly magazine, for close to fifty years, the last fifteen under the direction of David Meyer of Glenwood, Illinois. David is now retiring from the role, this November issue being his last, and is turning the reins of the publication and the organization over to Magicana.

Magicana looks forward to building on the success of David Meyer and his cast of contributors, and plans to continue the publication of Magicol, stage the annual conference, and harness new technology, particularly as offered on the Internet, to extend the reach and membership of the MCA.

The Board of Directors of Magicana offered their unanimous support for the undertaking seeing it as perfect fit with Magicana’s mandate.

This winter, David Ben – Magicana’s newly appointed artistic director – will be leading Magic by Design – The Theatre of Magic Workshop at The Banff Centre of Performing Arts from January 4 – 9, 2010.

The program is designed to initiate those with an interest in magic into the inner secrets of the art, as well as to take an aspiring performer’s magical expertise to a new level. Participants are challenged to broaden their magical abilities through this six-day intensive course led by master magician David Ben. The workshop will be rigorous, in a format that will be dynamic and interactive. The program will culminate in a public presentation in The Banff Centre’s Margaret Greenham Theatre involving all participants and faculty.

That’s what Texas magician Norman Beck emphasized in his lecture to a group of magicians earlier this August. Beck, an accomplished magician delighted an intimate audience with several tricks, sleights and cons from his personal repertoire. He presented his lecture along with John Carney, a living legend in magic and sleight-of-hand.

Attendees were treated to nearly four hours of

outstanding magic performed and explained in great detail. Congratulations to Reuben Gazer who, through Magicana’s Tony Eng Youth Program, entered and won a front-row free seat to this one of a kind double lecture.

Earlier in the week, we were also fortunate enough to feature two fantastic workshops: upstairs, card magic enthusiasts were treated to an in-depth, hands-on class with Chicago card-man David Solomon. Meanwhile, downstairs Toronto magicians participated in a performance workshop with John Carney. John invited attendees to perform a piece of magic and then he offered practical and useful feedback, for everyone's benefit. Workshop participants were also the first to have the chance to buy Carney’s newest release Magic by Design; a book on techniques for learning, practicing and rehearsing magic.

Norman Beck, John Carney and David Solomon were in Toronto for the magic conference, 31 Faces North, hosted by Magicana. Thanks to all three for making these fantastic learning opportunities available to the Toronto magic community.

It's unofficially magic week Aug 19-23 in Toronto, and you are invited!

Magicana Chairman, David Ben invites you to attend the magical events that we are hosting in August.

For several years now, Magicana has staged a conference called 31 Faces North. The conference attracts stellar names in magic, and as a result, we have worked with Jeff Pinsky and The Browser’s Den to stage a lecture each year for the greater magic community. Past presenters have included Johnny Thompson, Max Maven, Eugene Burger, Roberto Giobbi and Eric Mead.

This year we thought we would do something different. We decided to stage a mini-convention of magic – two superb performers and lecturers for an afternoon of entertainment and education.

MAGIC DAY – Sunday August 23

So, on Sunday August 23 you can enjoy meeting, watching and learning from Norman Beck and John Carney. Each will perform a full lecture – with a suitable break in between – for a limited group.

I have known Norman for many years and respect both his thinking and performing. Having seen him perform and lecture, it is no surprise to me that Norman is considered one of the “inner circle”, a confidant of the who’s who of magic that includes people like Steve Forte, Michael Weber, and Steve Freeman. You will enjoy Norman immensely. He is one of the best-kept secrets in magic!

John Carney needs no introduction. He is simply one of the most respected magicians and performers of the last quarter century. It has been almost seven years since John presented his last lecture in Toronto. As he is one of the most prolific presenters of magic – and a celebrated student of Dai Vernon – you can be sure that John’s portion of the program will entertain and inspire.

John’s workshop will focus more on performance – your performance. Those attending will be encouraged to perform a segment from their own show in front of John and the others. He will then ‘workshop’ the segment, providing technical and directorial notes that move the presenter and the group towards more polished performances. David Solomon’s workshop is a hands-on cavalcade of card magic. If you are interested in subtle and sophisticated card magic with a commercial bent, David’s your man. Perhaps the best way to describe David is that there are Marlo guys, and then there is the Marlo guy: David Solomon was one of Ed Marlo’s closest confidants. Ed Marlo only lectured a few times in his entire life and, unfortunately, he is no longer with us. David Solomon, however, knows Marlo’s work as well as anyone – anyone – and was inspired by Ed to create his own magic. Interestingly, in recent years, David has become enamored with the Spanish School of magic, popularized by such performers as Juan Tamariz and Rafael Benetar, both with whom he is well-associated.

My Magic Hands Celebrates Five Years of Making Magic at Bloorview Kids Rehab

Recently, as part of national volunteer week, Bloorview Kids Rehab (Canada’s largest child rehabilitation hospital) recognized outstanding contributions from its staff and volunteers. Volunteers were honoured for one all the way up to forty years of service.

Magicana was acknowledged, for bringing My Magic Hands to the center for five years. Bloorview is one of our oldest community partners, hosting the program over ten times since 2004.

As part of learning magic at Bloorview, participants in the program use magic not only to learn new skills and develop self confidence, but also incorporate the practice of magic into their regular therapy routines to help improve areas like motor control, speech and memory.

We are always amazed when it comes time for The Big Show, both with the fantastic accomplishments of our new magicians, but also the tremendous support generated by the Bloorview community.

Of course, the magic never stops at Bloorview: My Magic Hands will be back for a summer session with new young magicians and another fantastic Big Show.

Richard Turner – The Cheat, left a very impressionable mark during his first visit to Toronto on May 23, 2009.

In partnership with The Browser's Den of Magic, Magicana was proud to present Richard Turner, world renown card mechanic, to the Toronto magic community. In both the three-hour workshop and two-and-a-half hour lecture, Richard imparted invaluable words of wisdom, unbelievable card techniques, and to our delight, many of his incredible stories.

The workshop was intense: with enrollment limited to twelve people, participants received hand-on-hand coaching by Richard as he shared his thoughts and advice on intricate card technique including: false cuts, false shuffles, full-deck controls and the table faro. He graciously spent a large percentage of time explaining and showing us detailed work on his legendary second deal. Many said it was the best workshop they had ever participated in.

Later that evening at his lecture, he performed for and audience of forty magicians and magic enthusiasts for over an hour. He included material from his Magic Castle Show and from a new show, Hoodwinked. For the remaining ninety minutes, Richard answered questions - again, in incredible detail - about his technique and thinking for advance card work including, palming and bottom dealing. Most importantly, however, he tipped secrets on being both a fine technician and a professional performer. Few have the ability to be both, but then again, Richard Turner is, indeed, a rare talent who has accomplished both, in spades. He closed the lecture with sound advice that left everyone inspired and motivated to raise the bar on their own work.

In keeping with his generous spirit, Richard also sold his products at unbeatable prices. Richard is a “touch-analyst” for the United States Playing Card Company and he brought many of his “made to measure” decks of cards, manufactured precisely to his standards. Parnterships make magic!

Magicana is proud to announce a new partner, The Learning Enrichment Foundation.

The Learning Enrichment Foundation (LEF) is an outreach organization dedicated to community and economic development. One of their primary outreach groups is newcomers to Canada.

In January, Magicana joined forces with LEF and conducted an eight-week My Magic Hands program with eleven participants ages eight to thirteen. The new magicians got to show off their magical talents at The Big Show on Wednesday March 11 for an audience of family, friends and members.

The young magicians were assisted by a team of “magic coaches”; a group of high-school students and young adults who are also newcomers to Canada. They generously volunteered their time to assist and mentor participants as they worked preparing their show.

A Twist on Volunteering

LEF recognized a wonderful opportunity to empower our newcomers to become volunteers as opposed to being volunteered to. Coaches helped magicians overcome several challenges not only in learning the magic, but also in learning how to face an audience proudly and perform with confidence.

Volunteers commented that:

“I enjoyed working with the kids to improve their self-esteem and watch them successfully learn magic.”

“It was a great experience for me to help the kids to learn the magic tricks. I think it is a great opportunity for the kids because magic also teaches you how to stand up in front of an audience.”

“It was really a nice experience. I’ve learned how to make people encourage to do something and how to support them.”

Congratulations to our newest magicians on your successful completion of the program and thanks to the magic coaches for all of your energy and support. An Artful Collaboration

One thing that children learn at My Magic Hands is that putting on a magic show is a lot of work.

There are tricks to learn, scripts to write, moves to practice, words to say, … and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. But it will all be for naught if you don’t have an audience. So, you also have to get people to come to the show… but how?

In our latest My Magic Hands session, Magicana partnered with Harbourfront Community Centre (HFC) to introduce magicians and arts students to the idea of collaborative efforts and production design.

Participants in HFC’s Healthy Choices after-four art program were enlisted to be the designers for the posters and invitations for The Big Show. Other participants where recruited as magicians for Magicana's My Magic Hands. The Big Show is the culmination of the magic program where magicians invite family, friends and members of the community to share their magic and celebrate their accomplishments.

The artists – mostly students from a nearby elementary school – meet after school at HFC. Their task was to find images that would make people think of magic and transfer their thoughts to paper. Posters were displayed on the walls of the community center and a neighbouring school in the weeks leading up to the show.

A second team of artists, this time audio-video specialists (again, part of HFC’s Healthy Choices programming) were also brought in to add a new dimension to The Big Show: large screen projection. Thanks to the arts media students, our magicians will be able to present close-up magic quite comfortably to a larger audience.

This artistic collaboration is the next evolution with My Magic Hands and the Healthy Choices programs at HFC. It adds new layers of education and interactivity to staging The Big Show. Special thanks to HFC program coordinators and instructors Michael Brown, Adeyemi Adegbesan and Neda Skific-Lee and, of course, the multi-talented artists HFC.

The Magic Cafe honours Zarrow & Vernon

Every January The Magic Cafe, the world's largest online discussion forum for magicians, votes for the best book released in the preceding year. In 2008, forty-six new magical publications were nominated. Ballots, from over ten different countries, were cast by a forum of members during January 2009. The results were tabulated and announced on February 1, 2009.

Zarrow: A Lifetime of Magic by Magicana's Chairman, David Ben, received 15% of the votes and came in second place. This is a tremendous accomplishment since the book was late in (November) 2008 with a limited print run.

Dai Vernon's Revelation was also recognized with 5% of votes.

Both books are available from the publishers Meir Yedid Magic (Zarrow: A Lifetime of Magic) and Mike Caveney's Magical Words (Revelation).

You will feel the quality of the paper and when you get to Herb's effects, you will see photographs of such exceptional quality, that you will be stunned by their clarity. So much ink was used, the pictures are almost raised. Quality, quality and more quality.

The large number of effects are portrayed with the precision and accuracy which only David Ben could. The subtlest of techniques are both discussed and represented. I cannot express to you how truly exceptional this volume is. You simply must experience it for yourself, no question. The writing is exceptional and the flavour is rich with insight only transmittable from a card man who has studied and knows the material to the Nth degree.

David Ben knows how to make an exceptional piece of reading material, which will last a lifetime and be used and cherished by many, for years. If only all magic books could be as well thought out and exceptionally made as this. The Zarrow book is now the standard which all future magic books should be judged.

Zarrow: A Lifetime of Magic

Sharing Wonder with New Partners

Havergal College & Lawrence Heights Middle School

Magicana is pleased to introduce a new format for My Magic Hands. The program, now in its fifth year of operation, introduces children ages eight to twelve (often classified as "high-needs") in at-risk neighbourhoods to the world of performance art through magic. Children work together with Magicana instructors to learn tricks over the course of eight weeks to stage A Big Magic show at the end of the course.

A new partnership with Havergal College and Lawrence Heights Middle School has allowed a new format to be created. The result: even more children to share in this unique, self-exploration experience.

Each participant is partnered with a high-school aged volunteer who serves as a personal magic coach throughout the program. With one-to-one support and mentorship, the learning possibilities increase dramatically. Volunteers also get to experience first-hand the positive impact that they can have in the life of others simply by being there and being supportive. Previously, one instructor accompanied by an assistant could lead a group of up to fifteen children. In a pilot session of the new format in 2007, twenty-five children worked one-on-one with volunteers from Havergal College's "Homework Club". Magicana is pleased to be working
with Havergal students again in 2008 to repeat the tremendous success.

As Magicana seeks to grow the My Magic Hands program in 2009, it is actively seeking community partners to expand the program in this new and improved format.

Penn & Teller Performance!

Magic In The Air!

It seems that, recently, magic has been creating quite a stir within the scientific community.

Researchers are beginning to take a serious look at the positive side-effects that come with practicing and performing magic. Recent studies point out several benefits include improved self esteem, communication skills and even improved concentration in school.

Earlier this year, a special session Magicana's My Magic Hands at Bloorview Kids Rehab was the subject of a study run by the Occupational Therapy Department at the University of Toronto. Researchers interviewed participants, parents, volunteers, therapists and magicians involved following a six-week magic course. Participants were all in-patients, out-patients or day-patients at the center which helps children faced with a broad range of challenges. The study confirmed what Magicana and Bloorview staff already knew: magic has a tremendous impact on the progress of their clients from improved fine motor skills to increased memory and speech.

31 Faces North 2008

Our sixth 31 Faces North conference – produced in association with Allan Slaight – was held August 14 to 17, 2008. Participants generate programming and this year, we saw unprecedented levels of sharing and collaboration in the art of magic. Honoured guests were Herb Zarrow and Ton Onosaka.

David Ben gave a tribute lecture in honour of Herb and Herb’s tremendous contribution to magic. David also highlighted Herb's vast body of work, sharing some wonderful touches, thoughts and subtleties of Herb's trademark style. David also commented on his research for the forthcoming volume, Zarrow: A Lifetime of Magic. For our second guest of honour, Max Maven interviewed Ton Onosaka, and drew out (bilingually) highlights of Ton's fascinating life for participants to discover. Most interesting was Ton’s lifetime commitment of bridging magic communities between the Eastern and Western worlds.

Another time-honoured tradition at 31 is the presentation of the Marshall Award, (in honour of Jay Marshall). Attendees voted Jim Steinmeyer as the 31er who contributed the most towards the conference’s success. Past winners of the Marshall Award are: Tommy Wonder (2003), Michael Close (2004), Billy McComb (2005), William Goodwin (2006), and David Ben (2007).

Also, thanks to the gathering of 31, Magicana as able to produce two special lectures for the greater Toronto magic community by Roberto Giobbi and Eric Mead. (See our previous post on the seminars and the Tony Eng Youth Challenge.) As promised, Eric brought friends to his lecture and had an all-star magic team, including Jason England, Michael Weber and Jamy Ian Swiss share pet secrets with the enthusiastic audience.

As a surprise for all our participants, Magicana released two new publications, How Gamblers Win and Spins & Needles: The Magic of Allan Slaight. Even as the co-host of this event, we were able to surprise Allan at our Farewell Dinner with the presentation of his collected work. Both volumes are now available from our website or from your favourite magic shop.

Tony Eng Youth Program

In May 2008, Magicana created a tribute fund in the name of the late Tony Eng. The fund was designed to promote and support youths interested in the art of magic. The first of our program series was the Tony Eng Youth Challenge.

Participants under the age of twenty-five were invited to write a short essay telling us what they would hope to gain by attending one of the many magic related events in Toronto during the month of August. In total, we sponsored four winning prizes: a seat at the limited-engagement, Giobbi on Vernon; a seat at the Eric Mead Lecture; a seat at the Michael Ammar Lecture; and finally, a seat at the Michael Ammar Workshop.

We were thrilled with the entries. A "blind" panel of judges read through the essays and assigned two winners and two first-runner ups. Congratulations to our winners. Below is an account by Shane Cobalt, winner of the Giobbi on Vernon Seminar prize:

"Earlier this summer, special guest Roberto Giobbi (of Switzerland) delivered a lecture that will never be forgotten. For three hours (actually three and a half), Roberto discussed the magic of Dai Vernon. He demonstrated routines which were previously unheard of including a hilarious sequence using bananas. He carefully analyzed and deconstructed the psychology behind each effect.

Roberto's card handling was world class and a number of seldom seen techniques were brought to life for the intimate audience of 25. Roberto demonstrated a table shift (a technique Vernon had acquired which was designed for use at a card table) which was not made available until very recently. He demonstrated the shift so slowly that many in the audience were left blinking in disbelief. Roberto did a superb job of choosing and presenting some of Dai Vernon's masterpieces."

Many of Vernon's technical achievements were chronicled in the recently released Revelation, edited by Magicana's Chairman, David Ben (and published by Mike Caveney's Magic Words). Part one of Dai Vernon's biography was released in 2006. The second volume is currently being researched and is expected to be released in 2010.

Welcome to Magicana's Blog - a whole new medium for sharing wonder. As many of you know, Magicana is a registered charity dedicated to the exploration of magic as a performing art and to increase the public's appreciation of this art.

In addition to featuring our projects and special programs, we're thrilled to present a special feature: Cornering The Conjuror. In a weekly column, David Ben will answer questions posed by our dear readers.

David, the Chairman of Magicana, has been a professional magician for over 30 years. He has starred in and co-written the critically acclaimed theatrical productions The Conjuror, The Conjuror's Suite and Tricks. He is also the author of Advantage Play, Tricks, Dai Vernon: A Biography and the forthcoming Zarrow: A Lifetime of Magic.
